Volunteer Opportunities

Importance of Position:

Ensure that books are properly stamped, labeled, covered and shelved for checking.  Ensure that damaged books are cleaned and repaired for continued use. 

Qualifications:

• Commitment to the mission of the Library
• Willingness to work cooperatively with assigned trainer
• Physical ability to handle books and repair equipment
• Willingness to adapt to change and new procedures
   

Responsible to:  Librarian (209)754-6701

Responsibilities:

• Successful completion of training period
• Willingness to come regularly for work assigned
• Notify the Coordinator when you are unable to come in
• Notify the coordinator if you have suggestions or problems
   

Training Provided: 

An orientation to the Library and training of job specifics will be given.  Staff will be available to answer questions or give assistance.
 

Benefits of volunteering:

• Opportunity to assist the Library in preparing books and materials for patrons to check out.
• Opportunity to see new materials first
• Chance to work with others in performing an importance task
• Light physical work in a pleasant environment
• Opportunity to learn new skills

Importance of Position:
Ensures that our Library has volunteers who will provide educational and appropriate activities for the children.

Qualifications:

• Commitment to the mission of the Library
• Ability to work with children
• Ability to read and tell stories to children
• Ability to plan crafts, music and other activities

Responsibilities:

• Successful completion of an orientation and training period
• Willingness to come in for assigned work periods
• Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if you have suggestions or notice problems
• Notify the Volunteer Coordinator when you are unable to come in  

 
Training Provided:
An orientation to the Library and a short training on the types of children’s activities the Library provides. Staff will always be available to answer questions or give assistance.

Benefits of Volunteering:

• Chance to enhance the lives of children
• Opportunity to meet people who share similar interests
• Opportunity to ham it up and be creative

Ensure that library shelves and computers are kept clean and dust free, floors are vacuumed or swept, table tops are clean, displays, posters and fliers are displayed neatly and are current.

• Physical ability to bend, stretch, push a vacuum and lift small items

• Willingness to work cooperatively with assigned trainer
• Physical ability to handle books, sort them and place them in designated areas. 
• Willingness to discard unwanted materials.
• Ability to deal with the public in a courteous yet firm manner

Importance of Position:
Ensure that library items are returned to their correct place on the shelves, are neatly arranged in order so that patrons can locate what they ae looking for

Qualifications:

• Commitment to the mission of the Library
• Willingness to work with assigned trainers
• Physical ability to bend, stretch, lift books, move shelving cart and bend in order to see information on book spines
• Ability to file alphabetically and numerically

Responsibilities:

• Successful completion of a two – three hour training on shelving
• Follow instructions in Shelver’s Manual
• Assist with organizing books on the carts before shelving begins
• Regularly and systematically check shelves for disorganization
• Notify Volunteer Coordinator of problems or suggestions for improved shelving

 
Training Provided:
An orientation to the Library and a two to three hour training on shelving as well as specific training on the Dewey Decimal System. Each volunteer will receive a copy of the Shelver’s Manual. Staff will always be available to answer additional questions.

• Opportunity to brush-up or enhance your own library skills
• Chance to meet people who share similar interests
• Opportunity to discover new books you might be interested in reading
• Light physical exercise in a pleasant environment

Importance of Position:
A volunteer tutor will provide a learner with the knowledge and basic skills to achieve specific goals as they relate to literacy. Current information can be found here.

Qualifications:

• Commitment to the mission of the adult literacy program
• Willingness to work with an adult learner
• Be 18 or older and speak, read and write English at a 12th grade level
• Patience, empathy, persistence, compassion

Responsible To: Literacy Program Coordinator (209)754-6006

Responsibilities:

• Two to three hours a week
• Monthly tutor reports
• A six month commitment to the program  

 
Training Provided:
Tutor training specific to the needs of an assigned learner. Occasional tutor workshops.
