Calaveras Adult Literacy

Did you know that over 17% of adults in Calaveras County struggle with low literacy? It is never too late to learn to read or write. Calaveras Literacy is here to help!

We offer FREE one on one tutoring to adults who:

  • Are aged 16 and over and not currently enrolled in another education program
  • Want to improve their basic reading and writing skills
  • Complete an assessment

Adults meet with a trained volunteer tutor for learner driven sessions. Pairs meet at one of our seven branch locations once or twice a week for approximately one hour. Some examples of goals learners are working towards include being able to read to their child, pass a driver’s license test, write a letter, fill out medical paperwork, and get a better job.

GED Preparation

We offer FREE online GED prep testing for adults who are not currently enrolled in another education program. Our online program assesses the areas that the learner needs support and customizes a learning experience to help them pass the GED test. We also offer vouchers for GED practice testing and referrals to testing locations. Best of all the classes are available when you are!

Online Essential Classes

We also offer a wide range of essential online classes in life skills, work skills, and money skills.

Technology Courses

We offer tech drop-in help once a month and we are working to offer in-person computer essentials classes monthly

Become a Literacy Volunteer!

We need volunteers to help the adults and families of Calaveras County lay a foundation of literacy that will last a lifetime. You can make a difference in the life of an adult struggling with low literacy.

One on one tutors meet with their adult learner to provide support as the learner reaches their reading and writing goals. These meetings are one to two times a week for 1 to 1.5 hours. This would require a commitment of 2-5 hours a week on behalf of the tutor (including preparation time). Key qualifications of our tutors are empathetic, friendly people who read and write in English, have a high school diploma or GED, and want to help our local community. No teaching experience necessary. Please see the literacy volunteer flyer and tutor job description flyer for more information.

We also need help in the following areas:

  • Marketing and outreach
  • Event help
  • Tutor training
  • Inmate support specialist – working at the local jail to provide tutoring to currently incarcerated individuals

Learn more about what it is like to be a literacy volunteer by watching this video about Judi, a Calaveras County resident who dedicated her time to supporting local learners.

If you are interested in these opportunities or if you have skills that you think could benefit our program, please fill out the volunteer application form below or give us a call to discuss your skills.
